Avast has been in operation for more than 30 years, and claims to safeguard 435 million devices across the globe with its award-winning security software for cyberspace. The free software from the company has limited capabilities. However the premium versions, such as Avast Ultimate are quite comprehensive. The suite includes antivirus software, VPN services, password managers and Cleanup utilities to help users manage their passwords, remain secure online, and enhance their device.

Avast Ultimate is simple to use, with an easy-to-read layout which clearly delineates the various tools it offers. Its malware engine has performed well in independent lab tests, detecting numerous threats that are typically overlooked by other protections. Its web security feature is very effective, stopping phishing websites not caught by Chrome or Firefox’s default protections.

Other tools include an app lock, RAM boost, and an online scanner that scans for any weaknesses. The program’s ransomware security prevents third-party programs from changing the way you store, delete, or lock your data until you pay. The program also comes with mobile applications for Android and iOS. Apple’s restrictions have made the Android version more feature-rich, however both versions feature essential security elements like malware scanning and web coverage.

Avast’s only major downside is that it collects and transmits your personal data to its analytics firm, Jumpshot. In 2020, this was disclosed by a PCMag and Motherboard investigative report. This feature can be disabled via the settings menu. If you’re still worried, Avast lets you set the password you need to enter to prevent the program from sharing your IP address or other information with third-party companies.
