It’s a charming, very watchable film with a storyline that’s a little more complex than your regular rom-com. A coming of age film with a difference, it has all the charm of an Irish film set against the backdrop of life at high school in the small rural part of County Kildare.

The female lead remains constant throughout, and I will seek out other roles she has played with great interest. She conveys strengh and confidence and was a delight to behold on screen. The supporting cast is mainly forgettable but served their purpose I suppose. A great little movie about the very scary coming of age experience and process of finding oneself. It has everything from the awkward educational sex video at school, the inevitable crush on a teacher, as well as inappropriate hand jobs in a movie theatre.

That said, what stands out most about this movie are the moments of joy and understanding Eddie and Amber are able to share when away from the judgment of others. Everybody deserves to have someone who sees and accepts them for who they are – especially if they’re not ready for it.
They are fun and funny, but they are also quite heartbreaking. In the end, these are two kids who still don’t have to confidence to be who they are supposed to be, especially Eddie, who struggles so much in coming to terms with himself. Watching him fight his own desires and his fear of being outed is quite touching, and we can only hope the world will one day become a place where kids don’t have to be afraid of who they truly are. Set-in Ireland during the mid-90’s, Eddie and Amber decide to stage a relationship in order to stop everyone speculating about their sexuality. Eddie is keen to follow his Dad into the military, while Amber dreams of moving to the liberal hub of London.
